Dear Maxers,

I was running into Robert Henke's problem (numbers treated as symbols) on
several occasions.
I always found a way to work around it. But I only remember my last solution
(which wasn't very elegant but it worked):

Write your symbol to a Text object and bang it out with the line 1 message,
then clear its content. The number symbol will now be converted into a real
number. This can all be done without delay.

BTW, the dialog object lets you set a flag (use toggle on the right inlet,
if I remember correctly) which will change the data type that's being sent
out of the dialog object.

I hope this helps.

Happy New Patches to all of you.

Georg

Hi Tim
A lot of fractal music I've seen is for PC (do you have one or are you mac
only I wonder?
The egroup "cnfractal" (www.egroup.com)are very into writing software and
composing (altho' PC based).
Symbolic Composer software for the Mac (http://symcom.hypermart.net) has
some fractal provision as does AC-Toolbox (free Mac software) - this has
non-linear fractal chaotic &c functions, with the formulas included in the
docs. The cnfractalers should be able to advise you. The ICMA (International
Computer Music Association) Software Library (a links site ) is very good
for leads. You will find AC-Toolbox's URL there.
What is the address for Fractus?

If you're really keen, buy or borrow Mandelbrot's "The Fractal Geometry Of
Nature" - he's a tough read but you'll get more insight.

here's more info:
AC-Toolbox (algorithmic composition toolbox) is by Paul Berg at the
Institute of Sonology (!) at The Hague in Holland. It'd be a really good
value package, even if it wasn't free (which it is), but is Mac only. There
is now 3.4 which is a PPC version running with OMS. Earlier versions
use midi manager. Personally, I have been using the 68K version which
runs better on my PPC (!!!!!!) (G3 with 8.5 currently) although Paul doesn't
understand why this is. If I use Midi Manager, I have to turn it off in
extensions
manager when using OMS applications such as Max, Logic, M, S-Com &c. Many of
the examples on the PPC versions do not work on my PPC Mac.

For a gingko biloba tree of references to music software go to the ICMA
software library
at

Harmony Central is good for all sorts of music software

and, also recommended:Lightbulb jokes at:
now2000.com/jokes/jokes/lightbulb jokes.shtml

My intro and my first of 3 papers on my Harmonic Maths. are in Algo-comp
digests 10 & 13 (I think- or thereabouts) which you can get at the onelist
site. Or I can send them to anyone who wishes.
Parts 2&3 coming soon- watch this bandwidth!

Well I hope these are useful
Maybe let me know if anything comes up trumps for you??
Happy and bugfree millenia

2 dys ago i was sitting infront of the same problem: no way to convert a symbol to a number.
except by hacking around with atoi.
shortly before i gave up i tried a few things with "sprintf" and here is, what works:
type "sprintf %s" in an objectbox and a number will be happy with its output.

Unsurprisingly, the pages where the Max .pdf's are supposed to reside can't be
located (can't find the server). Opcode, of course, is going down the drain, so I
guess non-maintenance to their site is to be expected.

Or perhaps the servers resides in Australia, and it's just gone down because of
Y2K? I think not. I trust Australians more than I trust Opcode(/Gibson).

Anyone else got these .pdf's?

oh, i should have found out this by myself...
- i simply did not come up with the idea that the dialog object could have two modes....
great, thanks !
