i used a 1212 with MSP and cubase for quite a while. worked great.

once you get the hang of writing externals, it is really easy to put
together custom objects. going one step further, i would encourage people
to try their hand at making custom ui objects (the kind that go into the
max-startup folder). i just started doing this, and it is a lot of fun to
be able to extend max in this way. not as hard as i expected. quickdraw is
your friend.
