Subject: help! my toolbar disappeared

--============_-1279335317==_ma============
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

A plea for technical help from a normally quiet lurker on the list..

First the symptoms/facts:

  1. Half of the toolbar has suddenly and inexplicably disappeared on my
computer when running either MaxFAT or Max68K (versions 3.5.8). The
objects are *still* actually there and usable (if assistance is on you can
see where they are and pull them down and use them), but most of the tools
are simply not visible any more. All of my patches seem to be working fine.
  1. When launching Max68K, I get a whole pile of errors like:
    * error: rescopy: failed to add DLOG 3146, error -61
    * error: rescopy: failed to add DITL 3146, error -61
    * error: rescopy: failed to add STR# 3146, error -61
    * error: rescopy: failed to add ics# 3146, error -61
    * error: rescopy: failed to add ics4 3146, error -61
    * error: rescopy: failed to add ics8 3146, error -61
    * error: rescopy: failed to add DITL 3160, error -61
    * error: rescopy: failed to add DLOG 3160, error -61
    * error: rescopy: failed to add DLOG 3107, error -61
    * error: rescopy: failed to add DITL 3107, error -61
    * error: rescopy: failed to add DITL 3108, error -61
    * error: rescopy: failed to add DLOG 3108, error -61
    * error: rescopy: failed to add STR# 3048, error -61
    * error: rescopy: failed to add ics# 3048, error -61
    * error: rescopy: failed to add ics4 3048, error -61
  1. There does not appear to be problems with any other software package
installed on my machine, (although I have had some seemingly unrelated
mysteriously shrinking text on title bars..)
  1. The machine is a Powerbook G3/233 running OS 8.1

What I have already done/checked out:

  1. Ran Norton Utilities
  2. Tried reinstalling Max (but did not throw out the old copy, does
    this matter ?)
  3. Of course, checked for viruses.

  1. Tried getting rid of extensions (even all extensions but OMS)

Does anyone have any other ideas for me?

Thanks in advance for any help I can get..

Subject: folder object, hard spaces

Is there any way to get the "folder" object to list all the folders
contained within a given folder? Do folders have a four-letter file type?

And is there a PPC version of the "hardspace" object that was in the
"unsupported objects" folder on the max 3.5 disk?

Thanks

This means that there is not enough space on your hard drive
to create the temporary Max resources file that is created
every time you launch Max. This can take anywhere from 1.5 - 3mb
depending on the number of objects you use, and what kind of
resources they have. This file resides invisibly on the hard
drive and goes away when Max is quit.

It could be that all your problems derive from this.

In general, I have found that it's not a good idea to run *any*
program, or your OS, without 20 or 30 mb sitting around in
reserve.

Also, depending on what version of Max you are using, there
used to be this problem where the temp files would accrue in
the trash, and once you got ten of them, you would get the
same above problem. So empty the trash, also.

twosuns' (www.twosuns.com)realtime interactive multimedia system is based
on NT. It includes an audio engine that can drive a multispeaker array
(they've been mainly using Sonorus' Studi/o (16 channels) but other cards
should work too)

however, I don't know if they would sell you just the audio engine, but
maybe your client needs multimedia anyway.....

Subject: OT: floppy-less copying of Max/MSP?

Sorry everyone- I think I looked through all there was on the archive and
couldn't answer my quandary: I am fortunate to have bought me-self a Lombard
(333Mhz) PowerBook as an additional computer and an really corn-fused about
how to copy Max and MAP onto it...I need to get it running ASAP.

Opcode's site didn't help much nor did David Z's... so OK, I'm dense - or
it's too hot here in the East!

Should I use the original 3.5 Max CD? Will it offer a Challenge request? If
so, I can send it to Opcode and they'll send me a Response. How's the best
way with MSP? Is it "legal" to have two copies of MSP for the price of one?

Afraid of screwing things up yet again,

John

Hi John,

Sorry, I don't know much about how to get a floppless install on oldcer
MAX/MSP versions, but regarding:

This would seem like a definite no-no to me, but you should read the
license agreement to be sure. Some software vendors (not many) permit the
software to be installed on more than one machine providing they aren't
both used at the same time, or providing that one machine is used 80% of
the time and the other 20% (Norton uses this scheme I believe). Either
way, it will be clearly explained in the license agreement - you know, that
thing that we all click 'I Agree' to, but we never actually read. :)

Cheers,

Chris

John,

I think that you need to download Max 3.5.9-9 from the Opcode web
site. I believe that's the only one that has challenge/response copy
protection. It may take a few days to hear back from Opcode, though.
I got "same day service" when I moved my Max to my PowerBook, but it
wasn't a weekend.

MSP is challenge/response already, as you know. I'm sure that you can
legally *move* your copy of MSP to your PowerBook, but I don't know
whether it would generate a new challenge, or give you the same one
again.
