are you getting monochrome? then it sounds like the data files are
not installed in the right place (you must copy the contents of the
directory named "data" into the same directory as the max application.
in particular there should be a file named "cmap-data").

> 4. I want to make Bomb fill the entire screen.

all the demos do this, and it is covered in section 1.6 of the
tutorial. basically, the first argument to the bomb object specifies
pixel replication. if you set replication on 2 and your monitor on
640x480, bomb will fill the screen (except for a narrow band at top
and bottom because bomb uses a narrower aspect ratio). and there's a
"fullscreen" message that takes over the desktop, so that just bomb
output is visible.

i'm not sure what you mean. my patches continue to run and control
the bomb object even when the bomb window is in front, and even when
bomb takes over the whole screen. maybe you mean something different
by "control mechanism"?

i don't know what these things are.

The cd object has been uploaded again, I think it's better now.

I've been trying to use a new Mac FTP client called Transmit from
Panic software, which has a fabulous interface, but perhaps
I don't quite understand what I'm doing with it yet. This time
I went back to good old Fetch.

OK I'll do this.

I have associated key commands to trigger audio files in MSP (using the Key
object). When the Bomb window is active - ie in the front, the key object
does not respond to the key commands placed in the Max patch to trigger
audio in MSP which is then fed into Bomb.

Hello Maxers,

About the use of MSP for artistic projects :

The GMEM (centre national de production musicale - Marseille - France) has
built a virtual Drum using MSP on a G3-300 MHz and the VNSIII video
processor from David Rokkeby.

This installation is now installed at the "Cite des Sciences et de
l'Industrie" in Paris for the exhibition on The Sound during 10 years. The
official inauguration will take place on the 1st April 1999 at the "Cite
des Sciences et de l'Industrie". A concert will be presented by Frederic
Daumas on the virtual drum.

hello fellow maxers!

Is there anyone of you who have experience with different matrix/cuelist
solutions for distribution of sound? This means true 16X16 matrixes or
larger. What I am concerned about is ease of use, individual panning of
a number of sounds, reliability, interfacing, and ability to switch
between different preprogrammed "shows".
If anyone would give me his/her opinion about such systems, it would be
highly appreciated.
Best Regards!

I found a shareware FTP app that I really liked (and registered) called
NetFinder. There is a version 2 that is now beta, and I use it to dump
stuff up to my client's www sites. It basically makes the FTP server look
like a mounted drive (without the icon on the desktop). You get MacOs type
folders that obey most of the rules that they would were they open folders
from your HD.

I had way too many problems with Fetch, as it is pretty ugly, and it was
also corrupting a lot of files in a seemingly random fashion.

Cheers,

Chris

Something I haven't tried, been thinking about for a long time, and saw in
operation (pretty impressively at the Kitchen in NYC as part of a project
called CloudChamber) is a 16x16 MIDI controlled matrix mixer called the
Switchblade. There are 2 versions, one geared to guitar players who want
to control effects mix via foot pedals, etc. (Robert Fripp uses it), and
the other is the true 16 x 16 deal. Sorry I don't have the URL, the
company is European (German I think) and they offer discounts if you buy
factory direct. About $1850 US I think.

Let me know if you have any luck.

assuming that you're looking for matrix mixers that allow you to move sound
continously (call it multi-panning), and not just switchers, I would
recommend www.LCSaudio.com
other possibilities:
- APBtools sells a (sorta) ProTools-plugin called Sigma One but with limited
  realtime interactivity
- www.twosuns.com has a software spatialiser but that's part of a bigger
package
- http://soundscape-studios.no/ is in the process of designing a standalone
  spatialisation box (Oeyvind, any news?)
there's also lots of VCA-based matrix mixers at various institutions but
then you'd have to work at these very places. for my own contribution to
this variety look at www.topophonien.com.
finally I should add that I'll release a spatialisation module for
Creamware's Scope/Pulsar system later this year

Subject: improving MSP efficiency

Dear Maxers,
My name is Joel. I'm a Sonic Arts student at middlesex University, London.
I've been building a patch in Max which is supposed to interface a grid of
pressure mats with soundfiles played from the hardisk. Basically the same
patch
should be duplicated by 50 (the number of mats). To improve efficiency and
because there are only two subpatches supposed to be on at the same time
(its
due to be performed by two dancers), I've used the "mute~" MSP object to
make
shure all other objects are off when their respective mat isn't being used.
The mats are connected to Max via key comands. So whenever a single key is
pressed Mute~ unmutes all of its assigned MSP objects. I've tried it and it
seemed to work fine. after some further try outs (by pressing the key
consecutively) I got a buzz when I should have silence. I came across with
the "pass~" object but it didn't solve the problem. I was wandering if
anyone
has a suggestion for what may be wrong? Sometimes I hear the buzz noise,
others
I don't...!
Cheers!!

Subject: Detonate question

Hello

I'm pretty new to MAX, and have just started using it in a class this
semester. I am currently working on a project that uses detonate to read in
and then play back a multi-track MIDI file. It seems to work pretty well,
except for two things:

1) There is no obvious way to get the information about what instrument
should be played on what channel. As a result, all I get is piano and
percussion. Anyone know how to get this extra info out of the file?

2) Occasionally, I try to save my patcher while a large MIDI file is loaded
into detonate. Not only does this crash MAX, but it overwrites my MAX file
with a file of 0k, which is useless. Anyone know how to avoid this bug?

Thanks so much

Eric

In short:
We're in the final stage of production of our 2x8 matrix, it will be
shipping within
2-3 weeks.
It has a nice, easy to use graphical interface for drawing sound movements
onscreen
with a mouse or joystick. Cuelist for mapping sound movements to smpte.
Software written in max :-)

An 8x8 matrix (linkable for 16x16) with filters and delay on each input and
ouput
channel is under development, and will be ready during 1999.
Software upgrades will include more cuelist/scene features, with custom midi
events,
smpte sync for running as master/slave, and of course controlling the
filters and
delays.

The seriously outdated web page will be updated soon... :-)
