There were two versions of 3.5.9, one which will work with
the 3.5 key disk, and one which works with the 3.5.8 or
later key disk.

Let's suppose you've been the victim of either a cruel hoax
by someone at Opcode or just an honest mistake and you
have a "mystery" key disk that could be either 3.5 or
3.5.8. I *think* you can safely install the updater, and
run the 3.5.9-8 application without losing your installs.
But I might be wrong about this so if you don't feel like
taking chances, don't do it. What I am pretty certain of
is the following sequence if you have the wrong key disk:

- run max 3.5.9-8. It will claim that you need a key disk
or you need to "reauthorize" or something
- insert the 3.5 key disk. It may work, or it may just
destroy the disk. In the meantime, you may have lost
your installs too.

Just a couple of days ago another user asked why he has to
insert his key disk each time he runs the 3.5.9 version.
Because he downloaded the wrong version for his key disk.
After downloading the wrong version, it might not help
to download the right version, but it is usually OK.

So, what I would suggest is NOT inserting the old key disk
and instead trying to obtain a new one from Opcode.

Yes, the Max application has changed in 3.5.9-8. This is
precisely why there is a PACE issue.

Finally, note that the cd object I just uploaded to the
Cycling '74 site is newer than the one in the updater.
I'm not sure I can get that changed.

I am afraid, there is no URL. The Powerpad is like the Powerglove: an
ancient piece of hardware for the original Nintendo Entertainment System. I
believe it also was made by Mattel. Bought it on Ebay. Mine is still in the
mail, so I can't tell you much about how it works.

That would seem to indicate that you need to remove all bomb files from
your hard disk and rebuild the desktop. If even one is still around,
probably the rebuild of the desktop wouldn't work.

Is that a feature of bomb, btw?

Be afraid. Be very afraid. Eats installs.
Seriously, I was in the exact same situation as you, and it did eat my
installs (authorizations) when I tried it (using a preliminary version from
DZ without the massive warnings). Have to get 3.5.8 key disks from Opcode.
Good luck on that one...
