Glad I wasted half an hour putting together a patcher to answer it.
You're welcome.

Yes, of course. It's possible in many ways. The best place is to
look in the documentation and help file. You can change the name
and adjust the menu at any time in a locked patcher with the 'setitem'
command. If you save the patcher, the text is saved in the menu.

In MaxPlay, you must store the changed items in a coll file which
is written to disk in some way, since you can't edit and save the
patch.

Subject: G3 soundcard redux

So I've had the opportunity to try four multichannel sound cards in a new
G3 "Yosemite" system.
For anyone who may be interested, here is what we've found:

Korg 1212 I/O hangs the system when its extension loads. Korg responded
quickly: they've bought one of the new systems and so far have determined
that the card does register on the bus (which I guess means there are no
gross hardware incompatibilities). The nice man from Korg says they will
assign an engineer to fix the driver, but he couldn't say how long that
might take.

MOTU 2408 boots, but the PCI-32 Console app doesn't recognize that any
interfaces are present. MSP figures this out and won't load the 2408 ASIO
driver. I don't know a nice man from MOTU, but I hear they have a lot of
MIT graduates so perhaps one of them will figure out the problem eventually.

Ensoniq's PARIS card runs fine using Paris software. However, MSP won't
bother loading the driver since its minimum buffer size is 8192 -count
'em!- samples. I know several nice people at Ensoniq and they've told me
they are already working on a new ASIO driver with variable buffer size. I
don't know what the minimum buffer size will be.

Last but not least, the Emagic audiowerk8 card which was gathering dust on
a shelf--works fine! Who would have guessed. The only problem is that the
analog breakout cable bumps into the computer's translucent blue plastic
bezel, I nearly broke it trying to insert the cable. Using a 512 sample I/O
vector through the Audiowerk8 ASIO driver, latency is 59 msec.
Unfortunately they never made the ADAT Lightpipe daughter card for
audiowerk, so there is no multichannel digital I/O.

Using a 64 sample I/O vector size, and built-in analog I/O via Sound
Manager, latency is 34 msec.

Thanks to Matt Wright at CNMAT for doing the 2408 test with me and Dan
Philips from Korg for his suggestions and info.

One final comment, Apple's new chassis design isn't all surface color: it
is exceptionally easy to open up and work on. And, backwards software
compatibility seems to be very good, to say nothing about compatibility
with backwards software. However, I have far less time than I used to to
mess around with new systems. The net effect is that it took about the same
number of weeks as with previous upgrades,to find out that nothing works
quite as well as hoped-- although I've spent less time setting up to not
get anything done. Progress!

Can you point to a post where antiorp said anything like this? I doubt it.

On around 23-1-99 0:54, Bob Falesch said something like:

>ancillary objects like AiffPlayer under Win32 upon the MAX release on that

Well, as a data point, consider what Max for Unix (in particular,
NeXTStep) looked like.

Originally, a *lot* fewer external objects available for NeXT than for
Mac. And it was hardly as if all Mac developers were falling
overthemselves to port their stuff. With time (and ISPW), Unix got some
nifty stuff. But that was before MSP, which evened the stack in a lot of
ways (and there are still externals that aren't available for IRCAM/Unix
Max...)

The answer to Bob's question is: it depends upon the developer. I can
only speak for myself, so all I can suggest is not to hold your breath
waiting for QKSend to be ported:-)

Cheers,

Peter

PS: Note that QKSend & Co. rely on Apple Events. But this is only one
reason why I'm not likely to do a port.

For Whom , for WHICH MUSIC MAKERS ?

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        is
computer music ?

                                                                                        for
music makers living with the minimum outside Western rich
countries or even inside ?

What is the purpose of the Western artist ? To fit his civilization ?

                                                                                                                                 Why
do you make music with so expensive computer tools
?

To follow the fashion, and to feed the Capitalist System i.e the
inegality among people on our planet ?

some people eat every day
some people don't

                                                                                                                                        What
is the role of the artist in the society ?

                                                                                To
decorate the "beauty" of our Western political and
economical system ?

                                                                                                                                                        What
became of the independency of the artist ?
                                                                                                                                                                        Have
they become scared of the poverty ?

                                                        How can an
economical system control the creativity of the artist
? How can you accept it ?

                        Aren't you shame ?
                                                                                                                                                                        This

spend more your time to decipher softwares, repair

                                making music

you really making music for people ? Without following
the false and controlled Economic Market rules ?

the computer Artist ? Who build computers ?

is the price to lose our time ?

These TOYS are supposed to be for artists !

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                which
experimental artist is enough

COMPUTER MUSIC IS THE OFFICIAL ART
