Haven't used a tower version, but my G3-266 desktop with MAX/msp and
Korg card is holding up well after several flights and a few thousand
miles in my VW van. I have it installed in a rackmount kit (from UK firm
Power Master) in a 6U double skinned (with foam padding) case along with
a Studio 4 and a special interface made for by Emmanuel Fletty at IRCAM.
No problems so far (not even authorisation problems!!). Before Christmas
I took both that and my trusty ISPW (veteran of many journeys over six
years) on a gruelling UK tour with the Evan Parker Electroacoustic
Ensemble. Eight concerts in six venues plus a recording session in a bit
over a week. Everything just worked! I'll let you know if I get any
problems.

I have December '98 IRCAM C.D, but, unless you are saying that PAF is part
of the 'Manoury Lib 1.0' , I can't seem to find any other reference to PAF.

Also, could you explain where I can download the LPC and formant
objects...or, when you speak of 'formant objects' are you referring to the
new IRCAM\MSP 'Chant' objects ? :)

I'm sorry, but, which IRCAM\MSP object reads AudioSculpt formant analysis
data files into a patch?(BTW - I use AudioSculpt)

Thank you and Best Wishes,
NJC

Subject: font handling in Max

Hi Maxers,

Curious thing I've discovered in Max, I'll have a message box or menu
object=
set to use a specific font (in this case Charcoal), yet when I compile an=
app and run it on different machines all different kinds of fonts turn up=
(often Arial or Times). There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it,
because=
on some machines the Charcoal font comes up fine. Is this a problem with=
the way Max deals with fonts? If so, is there a fix for this? (the app is=
on my website http://www.music.mcgill.ca/~marcel if anyone's willing to
try=
it. I'd be interested to hear what kinds of fonts pop up on different
machi=
nes)

With hopes for a peaceful Max list in the New Year,

Marcel Wierckx

If this is too basic an answer, I apologize, but
I assume you're aware of the fact that a font must exist on the
destination computer, and that if you save a ptcher specifying
a font which does not exist on the other system, that it can't
display properly? Or are you saying that saving it with
Charcoal then does not display Charcoal on a machine which has
access to that font? I've never seen that behaviour...

Subject: Firewire/USB foregrounded - RS422 dead

Returning to the Firewire/USB hardware topic, the latest news from Macworld
SF this past week is the release of the next generation G3 desktop line...

All models come with USB and two 400 Mbps Firewire ports... no serial ports
(RS422)!

over 20 new Firewire products made their debut as well... including
harddrives.

I also heard from the dev community that a MIDI compatible USB driver is
coming soon --
a beta has been released with the USB DDK. the problem it seems is that
Apple didn't have enough time to finish isynchronous data support. Once the
driver is released as an update, we should quickly see MIDI interfaces on
USB

i read dictionaries. and i write dictionaries.
it was an occupation which seemed initially thrust unfairly upon me by
financial necessity. one which over the years i have come to love deeply,
one which i now practice fervently at my
economic peril. it has taught me to experience words and language quite
literally as living beings as beings who outlive
each of us who are recording within their very selves the patterns of our
thoughts as beings who care a great deal how
they are employed. i wander into their dominions ever more deeply moved
more faithful that there is after all a
reason behind this chaos of experience.
