in this moment of late twentieth century, robert schumann's musical
compositions do not lend appropriate subject matter for newly commissioned
work (not to be mistaken for his wife clara schumann who although a
celebrated concert pianist also produced similarly thin work).

the florid banality of r.schumann is relegated to opening sequences of
middle class symphony orchestras in order to pacify unadventurous audiences
before presenting contemporary organizations of sound such as berio and
saariaho.
r.schumann's pithy piano works and structurally unsound orchestral
compositions
do not offer source material for late twentieth century architectures.
their deconstruction would be instanteously rendered inconsequential,
their simplicity and extraordinary absence of ingenuity being insulting
to any intelligent listener.

there is a remarkable lack of depth and character throughout his entire
repertoire, and it was perhaps too late that r.schumann realized this.
once a student of law, never heralded for his musical brilliance in his
youth,
he succumbed to insanity after a decade of attempts at mid-period romantic
composition and was thereafter incarcerated to the asylum system
of bonn in the early eighteenth century, hence waiving all possible
reprieve that his industrious endeavors at symphonic etudes and lieder may
not be considered fruitless.

as material for compositional structure one may as well be commissioned
to take inspiration from a television commercial.
