I haven't attempted it, but it's entirely possible. You could do FM
synthesis with as many operators as you want, limited by the speed of
your computer. There's no single more-than-two-operator FM patch like
the simpleFM~ object in the FM Synthesis tutorial, since there is
more than one way to hook together the operators when you have more
than two of them. The DX7 synthesizer had six operators and 32
topologies ("algorithms" Yamaha calls them) if I remember correctly.

(Hmm... Interesting idea: an MSP patcher which emulates the DX7,
reads system exclusive patch files, and synthesizes the corresponding
sound. Have any of the CSound folks tried that yet?)

What exactly do you want to do with the pictures? There are lots of
processing proceedures that take Photoshop minutes to perform. Obviously,
no external will get Max to do them in real time. If you need such
complicated things done with your pictures, you could cheat by processing
them in advance and putting all possible results into a QT film, whose
frames could be accessed individually by your patch. Image/ine will do some
real-time things with pictures and can be addressed by midi, as well.

Subject: buffer~: how can you find out the size?

Hello again,

is there an object in MAX that can report the size of a buffer~ in
samples or at least ms?
I am reading random soundfiles from the HD into buffer~ - objects and
have to find out
the size because I want to play them back at original pitch with wave~ -
objects.
(wave~ seems to use less processing power than groove~)

I found no way to do so...

...do you know one?

Thank you for the help!

This information is several years old -

Jeff Harrington's DX7 emulator:

I just went through this exact same thing, (I highly recommend to anyone
planning to do MSP on the road that they avoid buying one of these
machines) and after quite a bit of research and cost-benefit analyses, I
bought a new G3 instead of the PCX. It's a really expensive card, & by the
time I've got my 3400 sold to a non-musician, it's a cheaper deal. I know
this isn't really answering your question, but...

(I'm also building a little splitter box so I don't have to go through this
with my G3. Audio I/O is on some subcard on them, by the way, so if the
_do_ fuck up, it's not quite so bad.)
