I am not using the MSP extensions due to their limited usability on a PMAC
7100/80 without much
memory.

Anyone have any suggestions on converting phone tones to MIDI? Is there a
way to use a modem and the serial object? I'd like to avoid pitch
recognition, since this will be for a mac 2ci. However, if someone can
recommend a readily available pitch-to-midi box, that would be great (it
just seems that this type of really great thing is somewhat scarce). I'm
trying to find a good solution to the problem of having to go to a wedding
that is about 600 miles from a show I'd like to play in.

Any comments appreciated,

Peter.

I'd consider going straight to the phone company. I mean, they've gotta
turn the tones into data at some point, right? There's probably a custom
chip that might be found in old/salvaged switching gear, which could be
rigged up to something like a BASIC Stamp or something and turned into
switch closures that you could then route thru an extra Mac keyboard (hook
up li'l wires to the key switches) and read that way.

But how this fits into the wedding/gig plan I'm dying to hear. I've heard
of phoning in a performance, but I mean, really...

Subject: msp - audiomedia iii

Dear 1000 Max-msp-ers !

Strange things happen.
I am using msp with a Audiomedia III card and most of the time this works
stable. (There are some strange crashes, but after restarting msp
everything is fine again. )
But :
Sometimes after using msp i am not able to get any digital out from the AM
III via Protools.
Everything else works fine, the signal appears at the analog output, but
NOT on the SPDIF.
I tryed to use msp afterwards and i had no problems accessing the digital
output.

I figured out that the only way to restore normal function of Protools is
to reset the parameter ram and trash all the digidesign preferencies /
setup files.

I have the impression that this behaviour startes after crashes within =
msp.

Has anyone simillar problems ?
Has anyone a good solution ??????????

Thanx.

Dear Max Users!
I finally got the upgrade from 3.0 to 3.5.
My german distributor told me (because of an old installion disk) to install
it under System 7.5.
So I did on an external SCSI Volume.
But when I tried to use MAx under 8.1 he want the original masterdisk.
When I do insert it:Crash!
After the second attempt my mac even wont read the masterdisk but format it!
And do need it very urgent! Because of MSP!
I would be apreciate for ervery hint!

Hey there's this program called "supercard" (don't laugh) in a lot of =
ways it's very similar to MAX. It is amazingly powerful. My point? a =
lot of the issues, I deal with while programming in Max, are the same =
types of issues I deal with in Supercard. I've spent the last 3 years =
authoring a disc (enhanced cd, blue book) that is modal. from the =
very beginning all of the programming has been utilized in the =
service of a series of performance pieces.

Recently (the last 6 months) I've been working with Max to build a =
midi "front end" for the cd/performance. I've had some success and =
some problems. The reason I'm telling the list this, is because I'll =
be performing at a theatre called HERE in SOHO this saturday may 16th =
at 4:00PM. I believe that anyone interested, specifically in =
interactive music composition/performance art/digital video and =
spoken word, might get a kick out of the performance.

>From (relatively) silently observing and learning from this list, I =
think that my work deals with alot of the same issues but from =
(primarily) a visual artists methodology. I sincerely hope this is =
not construed as SPAM. While my intent is somewhat self serving. I =
think the work is germane.

(anyone with a beef feel free to flame me off the list.)

I too have had similar problems with MSP & AMIII though my problems are
entirely within Max. In my case it seems to be heavy MIDI output (though
why that would be I don't know) i.e. dense bursts of rapid note-ons, etc.
that shuts down the AMIII or at least silences the system. Even Mac alerts
are silent. Solution is to quit Max and restart. Unfortunately I'm using
the system in a premiere on June 3rd! Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
BTW its a G3 with a Studio 4 & 3.5.9...

After reading the replys to my question it appears I am just one of a few
who are not using MSP.

I must have missed the initial announcement about MSP and only just read
about
its existence in the June 98 issue of Keyboard.

Excuse my english.
I am not sure but: plug your powerbook in scsi with another computer and
authorize your new hard disk...

This new PB G3 attract me also. But in Canada we have only six
configurations
available. :(
