So we now know that Orpy "lives" in Oakland!

Thanks for your order. Unfortunately, 'Composing Interactive Music' is not
yet published until May this year.

Publishers only record our orders for certain amount of time before closing
them down if they cannot supply the book. I will therefore have to cancel
your order so that, if you wish, you can try to re-order much nearer the
due date.

Anyone else in the UK managed to order a copy from anywhere?

Why is this an issue? Is there something proprietary about the coding
of the object?

If you want to use a real Wacom ArtPad tablet, you can use Richard Dudas'
"wacom" object to get the X, Y, pressure, tilt, button state, and other
variables. I used this on Saturday night in a concert here at CNMAT.

David Wessel, Adrian Freed and I wrote a paper on using digitizing tablets
musical controllers that we presented at ICMC97; you can check it out at

Subject: FPIC and NUMBER BOXES: foreground/background problem

I'm having a problem using number boxes in conjunction with
GUI pict files, imported into MAX using fpic. I position the
number boxes carefully over the fpic object, ensuring that the
latter is backgrounded, so as not to obscure the number boxes.
However, I want to dynmically change the look of the number boxes
according to context using a "flags" message, and unfortunately,
what happens is that as soon as an individual number box receives
a flags message, any other number boxes which are also superimposed
on the pict object are sent to the back, obscuring them from view.

Is there a work-around for this that someone could suggest?

Thank you David for explaining how to get my patchers back from a
standalone application.

I didn't use Resorcerer, which I don't have, but an old (1990) freeware
called 'Resource Leech' (size: 16 K !) by David Lambert. This application
"lets you extract the contents of a resource in a file, and copy it into
the data fork of a new file. It lets the user leech (or extract) all or any
of the resources of a specified type in a specified file, and leeches them
into a data file with the file type and creator provided by the user." The
developer says "this program only works on machines with at least the 128K
ROM, i.e. anything from a Mac 512 upwards"! In fact it works still
perfectly well on a PowerMac and system 8.

The complete operation took me seconds.

Hello Maxers

I am trying to make a small standalone application using MSP objects.

I made a collective (as usual) and used Application Installer version

Can't fragload (missing MaxAudioLib), err -2804.

No MSP objects present in the applications (resulting funny connections

And of course, no sound...

Where did I go wrong?

Thanks for your help

On the Ircam FTP there are two FAT objects which do just this:

"apd" which you can find in:

and "wacom" which is in:

Subject: MAX authorization disappearing

I have a MAX 3.0 system set up on a Quadra 610 running 7.5.1. All
of a sudden my authorization got turned off, through no action of my own,
necessitating using up my other authorization. When I talked to opcode
they were kind enough to send me another disk, but I also sent a letter
to them asynchronously and their reply to this said that
officially I would have to pay about $20 for a new authorization disk.
This troubles me my authorization going poof. What is the problem?
Do I have to worry about more similarly bizzare things happening?

Subject: Ircam FTP update

Zoron and Xoaz strike again!

The Ircam FTP has (finally) been updated!

To get there you need to go directly to:

This directory is invisible from its parent directory, so you need to type
the full pathname; you cannot get there if you start browsing from the /pub

What's New?? (Thought you'd never ask!)

There are now two NEW sub-directories in the max directory:
MSP (for MSP-related objects and things), and
PPC (for "elitist" PPC-only objects) !!

Paradoxically, the bulk of the exciting NEW stuff is found in the good old
FAT folder. (Most of the things in the MSP folder are taken from the
cycling74 site, and there's just one item in the PPC folder: David Z's bomb
object - also taken from the cycling74 ftp site.)

The new FAT items include (but are by no means limited to):
E.Singer's FAT AiffPlayer and Boids, S.Kay's collX and optimized gates, a
FAT version of J.McCartney's pyrite object, G.Obiltschnig's ascript,
P.Castine's QKSend, K.Essl's updated RTC_Lib, and a host of FAT Max-made

Please note that the Public-list file which provides a detailed listing of
the contents of the site is now in the .pdf format, so you can read it
directly from your web browser if you have Adobe Acrobat installed! That
having been said, however, we still recommend using an FTP program such as
Fetch for downloading the files from the server, since it will be
light-years faster for file transfers than browser programs like Netscape.

You will also notice that the update date is marked April 1, 1998. This is
a silly April Fool that we've decided to do a bit early.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the Ircam public FTP site!

Springtime greetings from sunny ol' warm-n-tropical Paris, France.
