Could somebody please explain how to do the following? I have a bang
going to a read message going to a seq object. The read opens the file
list and I choose a midi file to play. So far so good. When I add a menu
object with the list of midi files at Max root, and try and send the
right output to read $1 I get an error. What I wish to do is choose a
midi file from the menu object and get Max to play it. Thanks,

Mic.

Have a look at the "Options" menu whether "Overdrive" is checked. Then you
might look into "Configuration..." (under the same menu) where you can
configure the MAX scheduler.

Hope that helps,

I had a powerbook that did that once, you'd best send it back to the shop.

For those interested in BPM calculated form an audio file (in non-real-time
though--I wonder whether MSP will allow you to do this in real-time) I have
the following solution:

I have worked quite exensively on the translation of speech into music.

For this, I first use Lemur to do a MacAulay-Quatieri-type FFT and I save
the data in the Lemur format.
Second, I use MAX to translate the data file into text format, rearrange
the data and save a adjustable number of tracks (storing information about
track number, amplitude and frequency)
Third, I use the data to:
a) translate the track information into MIDI and music notation--I use a
MAX patch to force Finale to display microtonal deviation in quarter-tone
resolution and dynamics as well.
b) calculate a sum-of-amplitude curve (which gives you the maxima and
minima on the time axis). Using the maxima and minima, I can finally
reconstruct the exact timing information, in other words, with the
appropriate algorithms I could use these data to extract the BPM.

If this doesn't solve the problem, just consider it a humble contribution
to the MAX list.

Stephen,

This is because you had the CD player rather than the floppy disk in the
expansion bay. Just replace and do it again. Worked for me.

Specifying the exact error message would be helpful.

You might make sure that "evaluate as text" is checked in the
get info dialog of the menu object.

Subject: msp benchmarks (also powerbook 3400 opinions)

shall we keep fleshing out the chart then? i have added data points for my
powerbook 3400/240 and my powermac 7200/75.

notes: i am using max 3.5.9. for each test i loaded the patch, started the
adc/dac, and watched the cpu values fluctuate. the value i report is my
best guess at the average over time - so there is a big margin for error.

there are two sets of values for the powermac 7200 - one using the sound
manager, and one using the "direct i/o" msp drivers for my audiomedia III
card.

i am including benchmarks for my looper patch
(http://www.sirius.com/~ear/software.html) which uses a bunch of pretty
basic msp objects - buffer recording and playback, lores filters, etc.

i used tabs for formatting - hope it looks okay:

machine thru patch cross dog looper

PB G3 5.25
PB 3400/240 11 81 36
PM 7200/75/SM 16 78 64
PM 7200/75/AM3 28 0 ** 68

** this patch "blew out" the 7200/AM3 configuration. there is a digidesign
bug where if the cpu usage exceeds 100%, even briefly, the card stops
working. david z. has been trying to get them to fix it, naturally...

i would be interested to see more data points.

incidentally, i have been happy as clams with my 3400 - i only wish someone
made a pcmcia card with digital ins and outs...! emu makes a
proteus-on-a-card with digital out, mac drivers due "real soon now". there
is a french company that makes a high-end card with analog and digital
input - a mere $1700. perhaps they will make a cheaper version without the
expensive converters...

>Note that both of these tests were done with huge collections
>of inits running - nothing very scientific or optimized
>about it.

i thought about this too, and removed all my inits - no difference!

just another data point,

I recently downloaded from the Ircam public site the PPC version=20
of the Lobjects - I formerely worked with a Quadra 650.
Two of them (Ladd and Ltop) don't seem to work : Max returns the
message "not available for Power PC". Where could I found them ?
Thank you in advance!
