Subject: Max and Powerbook Question

I have Max 3.0 installed on a Powerbook 190. Sometimes I want to use it
from
my desktop Mac without copying all my projects and Max folders. I've tried
using the Powerbook as external hard disk, but every time I switch the
computer, the copy protection asks for the master disk. So, do any of you
Powerbook users have an idea how to do this. Maybe is there a way using the
Powerbook as start volume. I tried it, but it didn't work.

Thanks, Andreas.

We made 2 patches for the Lexicon LXP15 and the DX7II for controlling them
in real time via SysEx. You can download them at :

OOPS!
one thing I forgot to say about my corrected chord recog patch is that it
requires one "unsupported" external object: James McCartney's 'sort'.
(Thanks to Brian Shepard at the U. of Oklahoma for pointing this out.)

If I remember correctly, this object was not included with the rest of
McCartney's ListOps&etc... on the 2.1 -> 3.0 diskettes, but has always been
available on max-external ftp sites. The object (FAT) was finally put on
the Max 3.5 CD-ROM
(and is still available at the various ftp sites.)

Another thing I should have said is that the 'thresh' object can be
replaced by the unsupported 'quickthresh' - also found somewhere in the
unsupported foilder on the 3.5 CD-ROM. Quickthresh functions a little
differently from the standard 'thresh' and can be faster at detecting
chords in many cases.

As a general rule, I try to use as few non-standard externals as possible,
but the various list objects by Elsea (Lobjects) and McCartney (List Ops)
are often just too useful to pass by!

Right now, the max folder at the IRCAM FTP appears empty. It's really not.
The problem will be fixed ASAP.

Subject: MaxListserve Archive

I uploaded the latest version of my unauthorized archive of this list. For
those of you that don't know it dates back to Oct. 95.

The archive comes with three files, a readme file, a template for Filemaker
3.0, and all the data as tab-deliminated text so you can load it into
whatever database you want.

You can find the archive at serial.music.uiowa.edu, in the pub/max folder.
It will probably be in the upload folder for a couple days though. Don't
use Netscape to access the site, it won't work; mac users should use Fetch
instead.

The archive has been tremendously valuable to me in programming patches,
and trying to build externals. Also it's a good resource for other
products that work with max....

The bad news is that I am resigning as the archivist as of the end of July
1997. Hopefully this will prompt someone to create an online version of
the archive. Maybe Chris can talk to the people at McGill for us.....If
anyone else is interested in taking over the archiving, feel free to
contact me.

Actually, you're very lucky that the copy protection hasn't self-destructed
and lost you the ability to run MAX at all. You've run across a perfectly
legal and sensible usage situation that the CP forbids you from exploiting.

Basically, you're out of luck. All I can suggest is that you pick up one of
the freeware/shareware folder synchronisation utilities to move any changes
in the directory free from one machine to the other. (There's something
called SwitchBack which seems pretty good.)

Complain to Opcode and Pace about the copy protection.

Subject: Freeze w/ timeline object

I'm a newcomer to MAX and to this list, so please forgive me if this is
an obvious question: Are there any known bugs with the timeline object?
It seems that this object works fine until I save it and quit MAX. If I
then attempt to restart MAX (even after rebooting the whole system --
I've tried lots of variations on this) and open the patch containing the
timeline, I get a system freeze. I've reached the point of desperation
with this one. If anyone has a useful suggestion, I'd be most grateful.

Hello,

I guess this is a "new kid on the block" kind of question.
Where are FTP sites for downloading Max patches, updates, and so forth?

Thanks,

Subject: MAX control of video mixing gear

I am interested in controlling video mixing gear through MIDI. (I currentky
own a Panasonic WJ-MX30 mixer, which has a very pporly documented RS-232C
interface. I'd consider getting the new WJ-MX550 if I could control it
through MIDI.

Has anyone out there done anything with MIDI, MAX and video mixing gear.

Thanks.
