For this purpose I suggest the use of Eric Singer's AiffPlayer which is
available at the IRCAM MAX-archive. Unfortunately, this object runs only
with the 68k-version of MAX.

Me too.
I've recently upgraded from max 2.5 to max 3.5.1 and with the older max I
used to get 31 (!) voices on my PPC 8100. Now I only get 4 voices (with
both FAT and 68k version of max 3.5.1)
